Mike's Cap

An image from www.Mike-Hawthorn.Org.Uk
You really can't hope to own anything more relevant than this if you are a Hawthorn fan - Mike's trademark, his original peaked corduroy cap.

This is a very sad and moving item since Mike was wearing this actual cap at the time of his death.

A policeman collected the cap at the scene of the accident in January 1959 and gave it to Mike's mother. Later, when Duncan Hamilton formally identified the body at Guildford Hospital as he had pledged Mike he would do (and vice-versa) in the event of a disaster like this, she gave it to him as 'a thank you for carrying out this horrid task'.

Mike's Keys

An image from www.Mike-Hawthorn.Org.Uk

Tourist Trophy Garage

An image from www.Mike-Hawthorn.Org.Uk

The plaque is also available as a reproduction so you have to be careful. Expect to pay many hundreds of pounds for genuine examples

Coombs Service Station

An image from www.Mike-Hawthorn.Org.Uk

Coombs Service Station at Guildford was close to where Mike crashed in 1959 and there are many quotes on this site from people who were there when Mike flashed by at speed. Edward Rumfitt, assistant general manager of Coombs Service Station, arrived at the crash scene just after Rob Walker. Supervised by John Coombs himself, the car was loaded onto a truck and taken to Coombs Service Station (see 1959 for the full story)

Here are two very collectible items - an original dashboard plaque and keyfob, not of course as valuable as those from the Tourist Trophy Garage but still worth several hundred pounds.

Newspapers

An image from www.Mike-Hawthorn.Org.Uk

There is large scope in collecting period newspapers of Mike Hawthorn's death and the analysis contained within. Above is a montage of clippings that the owner has framed (but keep these out of direct strong light!) and below the front page of a contemporary publication.

Autographed photo
An image from www.Mike-Hawthorn.Org.Uk

Original photos, menus, race programmes etc signed by Mike are always sought after and can command high prices at auction - and especially his book, 'Challenge me the Race', carrying his signature if you can find one! Be cautious though and have a really good look at the item if you can or seek a cast-iron provenance before paying a lot of money.

Press Advertising

Advertisers liked Mike! Here Mintex are keen to feature Mike Hawthorn after his World Championship win! The photograph they used dates back to the early fifties though

Caricature book
An image from www.Mike-Hawthorn.Org.Uk

This spiral bound caricature book was produced by Shell-Mex and BP to mark 60 years of the British Motor Industry in October 1956 and contains cartoons of well known racing personalities of the time including Mike Hawthorn. The cartoons are by Sallon of the Daily Mirror. The full book contains 68 entries but they are often removed and sold singly. If you can find Mike's signed by him (they exist) then it's a nice image to frame.

An image from www.Mike-Hawthorn.Org.Uk

An original signed letter from Mike to a Mr Leedham from York explaining that he would be unable to attend the Annual Dinner and Dance on Feb 20 1959 as he had another engagement. Possibly rather too prophetic...

Syracuse 54 Steering Wheel
An image from www.Mike-Hawthorn.Org.Uk
An image from www.Mike-Hawthorn.Org.Uk

What remains of the steering wheel from Mike's Ferrari that was destroyed by fire after a crash at Syracuse in 1954.

Marimon in a Maserati drove too close to the right side of the track and sent up a shower of hay. Blinded by the flying chaff, the second place car, a Ferrari with Hawthorn driving, crashed against the safety wall and the car caught fire. Gonzales, about seven feet behind Hawthorn, piled into the Englishman's car, careened and went into the wall. Both cars were destroyed by the flames and Hawthorn was taken to the hospital, badly burnt.

All wood and the rivets have gone and part of the wheel has melted.

Hawthorn Memorial Trophy
An image from www.Mike-Hawthorn.Org.Uk

An 11 inch high smaller version of the current Motor Sports Association (MSA) 'Hawthorn Memorial Trophy' awarded each year since 1959 and which was first presented by the Hawthorn family in memory of Mike Hawthorn. This smaller one is engraved on the reverse 'PRESENTED AS A TRIBUTE TO MRS V HAWTHORN' and dates from 1959 when Mike's Mother received it after his tragic death. We are researching this more fully and will devote a separate page to it soon.

Below is Damon Hill holding the full size trophy:

1951 Leinster Trophy
An image from www.Mike-Hawthorn.Org.Uk

Mike Hawthorn's Leinster Trophy base won in 1951. The original cup is unfortunately missing. He was awarded this for his win in his Riley Sprite, BWK 324. It's likely that the car details and the wording 'Leinster Trophy' are a later addition since none of the other winners have this detail below them.

1952 Daily Express International Trophy Race
An image from www.Mike-Hawthorn.Org.Uk

55 Le Mans - Nockolds
An image from www.Mike-Hawthorn.Org.Uk

An original charcoal and goache drawing by artist Roy Nockolds depicting Mike negotiating the Esses at Le Mans in 1955. This is one of several preparatory sketches Roy did prior to the final painting used for the front cover of Andrew Whyte's book 'Jaguar Sports Racing and Works Competition Cars' (Vol II from 1954)

An image from www.Mike-Hawthorn.Org.Uk
It differs from the cover of the book (above) in many respects. Another version has the D-type sideways:
An image from www.Mike-Hawthorn.Org.Uk

No collection would be complete without period newspapers from the Le Mans race. This French edition has a rather graphic drawing of the crash...
