1955: Le Mans disaster
BBC News item with video from 1955 Le Mans (race but no crash shown).
Seventy-seven people have been killed and 77 others injured when two cars collided on the race track and crashed into the spectators' stand at Le Mans in north-west France.
Jaguar Test Driver Norman Dewis who also drove with Mike in the 1955 Le Mans race, recounts how
the windscreens were altered on the D-Type after a complaint from Mike. But then says how this actually lost them speed
and left Norman with a faster D-Type than Mike's!

A Lap of Le Mans with Mike
It's 1956 and Mike takes us on a 5m 15s conducted tour of the circuit in a
D-Type at Le Mans the day before the race.
The Jaguar was fitted with
cameras plus a microphone on a piece of wood hung around his neck. Le Mans was NOT closed to the public at the time
so watch as Mike avoids the Frenchman on a Bicyclette! And he didn't hang around during the lap either, overtaking
and passing cars on the road parts of the circuit!
Jaguar Test Driver Norman Dewis with Nigel Webb's recreation of Mike's Mark 1, recounts how he went with Mike to the Airport at some speed.
The British Pathe Archive
British Pathe has preserved much excellent original film news footage of Mike and his life including extensive coverage of 1955 Le Mans and his tragic death - the late Raymond Baxter is usually the commentator.
The video previews are all available free online via ITNSource in complete but low resolution format but are still very watchable. You'll need RealPlayer to view them
or anything that can read WMV format..
We've made a separate Pathe Videos page for these where you can select the links that
take you direct to the page at ITNSource (to preserve their copyright) from where a single click will download and run the videos!
They are available for individual purchase of course from ITNSource in high resolution at a cost depending on the end user application.

Highlights from Le Mans 1954 and 1955. After finishing second in 1954 Jaguar went on to win in 1955
with Mike Hawthorn and Ivor Bueb. Tragedy marred their victory.
A tribute to two great personalities of Fifties motor racing - Peter Collins and Mike Hawthorn -
featuring unique film footage and rare interviews with Tony Brooks, Lofty England, Stirling Moss, Phil Hill and Roy Salvadori.
To his admirers, Collins was the Golden Boy of 1950s British motor racing who could out-drive anyone when he was determined
to win. Tragically, he lost his life at the Nurburgring in 1958, the same year his great friend Mike Hawthorn
became Britain’s first World Motor Racing Champion. Hawthorn retired the following year but died in a road accident not long after.
Here we remember these two outstanding drivers, both on and off the track, and vividly recall a Golden Era in motor racing.
